Holy Childhood - 419 East Church Street, Mascoutah, IL 62258

Wayfinding / Greening

(2 out of 4 fishes)
With the steeple of Holy Childhood dominating the skyline, it is not too hard to find the church, and with the church picnic taking up close to the entire block behind the church, the festivities are not too hard to find.  Ordering was slightly chaotic with not much resemblance of a line.  Multiple lines leading up to a multi-sided concession stand.  Servers took your order, filled your order, and took your money.  No visible recycling.  Although beer was by the tap with re-usable cups and large condiment containers.

Food

Cod was ok.  Pre-breaded squares.  Having it as a sandwiched helped.  Hot dogs, fries, onion rings, and cole slaw were other choices.  Cole slaw was tasty.  Desserts were a highlight.  The kids really enjoyed the brownies with sprinkles in the icing.

Value

Good value.  Cod dinner was $6.50 which included onion rings and cole slaw.  Hot dogs were $1.  Desserts were $0.50.  Our family of five was only $20.   Beer was $2.

Atmosphere

Good atmosphere being able to eat fried fish outside on a beautiful summer evening.  By a little after 6pm, all the seating was in the shade and it was a perfect evening in terms of the weather.  Live music provided a nice community backdrop, although I would have preferred a little jazz to teens playing  grunge rock from the 90's.  Friendly volunteers.

Overall
2.5 out of 4.  A good solid fish fry.  A parish picnic turned into a fish fry at the end of the summer.  A perfect summer evening for being outside in the lovely small town of Mascoutah.  With cool evening breezes, music, and fried fish, a good way to spend a Friday evening.  I don't think Holy Childhood does a Lenten fish fry, so the summer picnic weekend may be the only chance to experience a fish fry here.  Check their calender in later August for their annual picnic.

Year End Reviews

Sometimes it is hard to compare fish fries from year to year. Comparing that Cod from 2014 to 2008 can be a little tough. With that in mind, below is a yearly re-cap for each of the following years. We got a little busy in 2015, then 2017-2019 went by in a blur, so we are missing a few years, so sorry!

Fan Poll Winners - Best Fish Fry

Every year Friday Night Fish hosts a fan poll to crown a yearly fan favorite Fish Fry. It's a two step process with Round 1 selecting five finalists, and Round 2 voting from the final five to crown the yearly fan champion. So get ready every year for the annual poll and get your supporters voting for your favorite fish fry! We had some voting "irregularities" in 2014, so we discontinued the poll (for now).

For a recap of past winners see Past Fan Poll Winners.
