St. Matthias - 800 Buckley Road, Mehlville, MO

Wayfinding / Greening
(2 out of 4 Fishes)

Good, clear wayfinding.  A large sign near the parking lot and Buckley Road.  Fish fry was easy to find once parked.  Ordering was simple and easy, and the line flowed smoothly.  About a 10-15 minute wait at 5:45pm.  You pay first and get a order slip, then get your food.  The only downside to ordering was that the food line crossed the main circulation path to the seating area.  With a large gym to work with, this conflict could probably be avoided.  A little low on greening. Lots of styrofoam, even for the drink cups.  However, there was many recycling cans throughout the gym for soda and beer cans.

Food:

Very good Cod, maybe the best in south St. Louis County.  They were the Cod nugget style.  Very buttery, hot, and juicy.  It's a good sign when you finish your Cod and you still want more.  Other  main dish was a shrimp basket, which was also very good (I had the combo - which was a nice option).  Sides included spaghetti, mac and cheese, hushpuppies, green beans, and slaw.  Slaw was a highlight of the sides.  My daughter gave the slaw a thumbs up.  When a 10 year says thumbs up to slaw, it must be good!  Good selection of desserts, including homemade.

Value:

Overall a good value.  About $33 for our family of 5.  Adult dinners were $7.50 which included two sides plus hushpuppies.  Good sized portions.  Child dinner was $5.00.  Only water and coffee included, however.  Soda was $0.75.  Dessert was $0.75 (dessert was a separate fundraiser by the girl scouts).  Beer $2.   Extra sides for $0.50, and extra piece of shrimp or fish was $1.

Atmosphere:

A very comfortable, spacious fish fry.  Large gym allowed plenty of room, except for having to cross the food line to get in and out of the table area.  Noise dampers on the wall made for an overall, fairly quiet background noise.  Busy, but not overly crowded.  Real tables and chairs.

Overall:
3 out of 4.  A very good fish fry.  One of the best in South County.  Cod was top notch.  We liked the option of the combo platter, which allowed us to have Cod and shrimp.  Plus an extra piece of Cod was only a $1, so we really gorged ourselves. Perhaps no "signature items", but a very well done fish fry. Only wished that they had tea and lemonade.  St. Matthias doesn't have a fish fry every Friday during Lent, so make sure you check their schedule before you go.   If you are looking for a relaxing, spacious, busy but not crowded fish fry, try St. Matthias.

Year End Reviews

Sometimes it is hard to compare fish fries from year to year. Comparing that Cod from 2014 to 2008 can be a little tough. With that in mind, below is a yearly re-cap for each of the following years. We got a little busy in 2015, then 2017-2019 went by in a blur, so we are missing a few years, so sorry!

Fan Poll Winners - Best Fish Fry

Every year Friday Night Fish hosts a fan poll to crown a yearly fan favorite Fish Fry. It's a two step process with Round 1 selecting five finalists, and Round 2 voting from the final five to crown the yearly fan champion. So get ready every year for the annual poll and get your supporters voting for your favorite fish fry! We had some voting "irregularities" in 2014, so we discontinued the poll (for now).

For a recap of past winners see Past Fan Poll Winners.
