St. Mark - 8300 Morganford, St. Louis, MO

Wayfinding / Greening
(3 out of 4 Fishes)

Good wayfinding and logical sense of progression from the parking lot, to the entrance, and through the ordering process. New parish center is easy to find, and a well lit entry walk and entry area leads you from the parking lot to the front of the parish center. Parish center is a nice addition and an early sign clearly separates "dine in" to "takeouts". Maybe there was an attempt to save on energy costs by keeping some hallway lights off, was the only slight drawback. Ordering was clear and easy. Plenty of menus to look at while waiting in line. Pay first and get an ordering slip. Line moved fairly quickly although it was crowded. Heard that lines can get long however.
Styrofoam plates, condiment packets. Although ketchup was in large bottles. No visible recycling.

Food

Cod was pre-breaded rectangles, but not bad for pre-breaded. The cod was nice and crispy. Sides were simple, but well done. The standard fish fry fare such as french fries, hush puppies, cole slaw, spaghetti, and green beans. Baked cod and fried shrimp were other main choices. Not a fish fry to try new items, but that's OK. Highlight were the delicious homemade desserts which ranged from cookies, cake, to a few pies.

Value

$8 for adult plate with two sides. $4 for kids plate. Plates included dessert and coffee. $2 cheese pizza. $1 soda, $2 beer. Overall, good value.

Atmosphere

New parish center was a highlight. Cafeteria was crowded with a lively buzz. Was a bit tight on individual table space, however. Once you are at your table, a little hard to get back out again. Place was packed at 6:00. If you come with a larger group, at first glance it may be hard to find a seat, but friendly crowd is more than willing to help find seats and re-arrange to make room. Good mix of young and old.

Overall
3 out of 4 Fishes. A good, solid fish fry. Nothing spectacular, but everything was done well. Good logicial wayfinding, fast efficient serving, and a friendly crowd. Maybe not worth a drive across town, but worth a stop if your in the neighborhood just south of the City limits. If it's later in the Lent season and there is still daylight out, you can burn off some of that fried Cod by utilizing the nearby River DesPeres Greenway.

  1. A couple of years ago, these folks had crab cakes and they were delightful. Didn't have them last year, or appearently this one. Wish they'd bring them back!

Year End Reviews

Sometimes it is hard to compare fish fries from year to year. Comparing that Cod from 2014 to 2008 can be a little tough. With that in mind, below is a yearly re-cap for each of the following years. We got a little busy in 2015, then 2017-2019 went by in a blur, so we are missing a few years, so sorry!

So get ready every year for the annual poll and get your supporters voting for your favorite fish fry! We had some voting "irregularities" in 2014, so we discontinued the poll (for now).
